The Revolution Started With The Quran
The words of the Quran exist in this world but do not belong to this world. These words belong to our Lord who is free from all mistakes and doubts. The revolution started with the Quran. It was revealed to the heart of Rasool Allah SAW, the safest place in this world. And delivered to the rest of the hearts. Then Allah SWT took the responsibility of protecting it until the Day of Resurrection. On this path of our intellectual and mental struggle, we have made the Qur’an a mean to clarify our questions and find answers. To know our Lord closely, when we started reading His words, we realized that Allah’s will and sovereignty are the subject and the purpose of this Book. Which is clearly written in verse 68 of Surah Al-Qasas, and many verses like this.
"Your Lord creates what He wills and He likes (whom He wills). There is no authority for those people, Exalted is ALLAH and high above what they associated with HIM. (Al-Qasas 68)
Previous Summary:
These verses are making us recognize our Lord as well as ourselves. To know its two main points in detail, we have written them separately as left-hand side and right-hand side.
There is no option for these people
(No Authority)
L.H.S.
Your Lord creates what He wills And He likes (whom He wills).
(Full Authority)
R.H.S.
In this equation, we decided to investigate the left-hand side because as human beings we know ourselves somewhat. We are aware of our nature, emotions and can feel ourselves. Prior to this research, we studied the entire Qur’an to check the clarity and maturity of the right-hand side and reviewed the verses that confirm verse 68 of Surah Al-Qasas in very clear terms. And undoubtedly leaves the deep influence of Allah’s will on the heart.
Locks on the intellect:
After a brief review of the right-hand side, let’s come towards the left-hand side. Consider the verses of the Qur’an that give details about this excellent creation of Allah SWT. From this study, we also came to know about the verses of the Quran which apparently show the control of a man over his actions. And we all know that we will be punished and rewarded for our actions.
Starting with this article and in subsequent articles I will present those verses or sets of verses that seem to contradict each other. Each set or question is a lock that we will try to open by finding the key. These locks are located on a path that climbs up like stairs. One by one we will open the locks, and only by climbing the ladder one by one we can reach the height of the mental level where we know who we are. If the left-hand side is completely solved for us, we will have no problem in understanding the right hand side. In Sha Allah!
Set 1:
And you do not will, except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise. (Aldhar-30) | And that for a human being is only what he strives for. (Al-Najm-39) |
While Allah has created you and that which you do? (Al-Safat-96) | Then after them, We succeeded you in the earth that We may see how you act. (Younes-14) |
Comparative Review:
In Set 1, we are being told on the one hand that man gets what he strives for. That means we can get what we want. Whereas the verse written on the opposite side tells us that we even cannot will if Allah does not will.
The second part of the set tells us that if we act, then our actions will be seen. While in the verse written on the opposite side, referring to the words of Abraham AS, we are being told that it is Allah who Has created us and our actions. Feels like, we are not the ones making our own actions.
Sound out:
Both parts of set 1 seem to be in complete contrast to each other. Each part denies the other which raises many questions in the mind. We can’t even want if Allah doesn’t want. It means good or bad whatever we wish, Allah SWT is putting that desire in our hearts. If He puts a good desire resulting in a good deed. We will get a good reward for it. And if Allah SWT is putting evil desires in our hearts, then we will do evil deeds and end up with punishment.
Question 1:
So why is Allah putting evil desires in our hearts? How is He deciding to give someone a good desire and a bad one to others?
Question 2:
If Allah has created our actions by putting wills, why will our actions be seen? How are we responsible
for our actions?
Al-Muqasit, The Most Just:
Now let’s seek the solution to our questions from the Qur’an. Why Allah SWT is doing this? Why is He giving good wishes to some and bad to others? On what basis does Allah SWT decide to give good and bad wishes to people?
We know that cruelty is not the attribute of our Lord. He does not oppress his servants. And we also know that there is no one who is more just than Allah SWT. He is the most just. And also orders justice to his servants.
Say: My Lord has ordered justice. (Part of verse 29 - Al-A'raf)
Allah is not ever unjust to His servants. (Part of verse 51 – Al-Anfal)
That means if Allah SWT is making one’s actions good by putting a good will in his heart and making one’s actions bad by putting a bad will in his heart, then surely this decision is also just. And no iniquity is being done to anyone. But how does Allah SWT make such an important decision? What is the basis for this?
Keys to Success:
I will try my best to answer these questions by the verses of the Qur’an that I have found. And surely I
am able to do so only with the help of Allah.
1) And no bearer of burden will bear another's burden, then you shall return to your Lord, and He will tell you what you used to do. Surely, He knows the secrets of the chests well. (Part of verse 7 - Al-Zumer)
2) Is the one who worships while standing and prostrating during the hours of the night, when he fears the Hereafter and also hopes for the mercy of his Lord? [Is better or the one who does not do all this?] Say: Can those who have knowledge and those who do not have knowledge be equal? Only the wise take advice. (Verse 9 - Al-Zumer)
3) Those who listen attentively, and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the wise. (Verse 18 – Al-zumer)
The Revolution started with the Quran:
All these three verses are from the same Surah, Surah al-Zumer. It is clear from the number of verses these are present in the Qur’an in the same order as I have written them. The verses between them describe other aspects as well, so I have extracted them and presented to you only the verses describing our topic.
I have highlighted the important keywords of these verses. What is featured is the password that will open our lock. The last part of our second question was how we became responsible for these actions. Let’s ponder upon the highlighted words of our Lord.
Verse 1:
And no bearer of burden will bear another's burden, then you shall return to your Lord, and He will tell you what you used to do. Surely, He knows the secrets of the chests well. (Part of verse 7 - Al-Zumer)
Contemplating the verse, the first statement that comes to us in this context is:
No bearer of burden will bear another’s burden
This is the last part of our questions and we have to prove this. By this verse, we got a thesis statement at the start. It will be proven in the end. It is certain that we ourselves are responsible. But how? It is Allah SWT who is putting good and bad wishes in our hearts. So why is He doing so? On what basis? So the answer was in this verse:
Surely, He knows the secrets of the chests well
This is also absolutely correct! We have no doubt in this, that only Allah SWT knows the secrets of our hearts. Only He knows! who made the hearts. So now what are the things that lie in people’s hearts on the basis of which Allah SWT decides good or bad for them? What are the exact reasons for putting good will or bad will in their hearts?
Verse 2:
Is the one who worships while standing and prostrating during the hours of the night, when he fears the Hereafter and also hopes for the mercy of his Lord? [Is better or the one who does not do all this?] Say: Can those who have knowledge and those who do not have knowledge be equal? Only the wise take advice. (Verse 9 - Al-Zumer)
In the next verse, Allah SWT started from the secrets of the hearts and ended with the brains. For those who are endowed with good will, the affairs of hearts are:
- They fear Allah and the Hereafter in their hearts.
- They also hope for the mercy of Allah.
That means they recognize their Lord. Further, Allah SWT has described the characteristics of people who have fear and hope:
- Knowledge.
- Wisdom
It means knowledge and wisdom are the two things that create the fear of Allah and the hope of mercy in the hearts. The question below indicates the justice of Allah SWT.
“Can those who have knowledge and those who do not have knowledge be equal?”
Among them, knowledge is the thing that creates fear of Allah and hope of mercy in the heart, but the thing that brings realization with this knowledge is wisdom. It means wisdom/intellect is that with which acquired knowledge is properly implemented. To whom Allah has called:
“Only the wise take advice.”
Verse 3:
Those who listen attentively, and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the wise. (Verse 18 – Al-zumer)
In the third verse, Allah SWT spoke about the behavior of those people after mentioning their secrets of chests and their qualities. Their attitude is that they strive for the truth and so
- They listen carefully
- They follow the best of it
In these three verses, three things are mentioned, which I have written in this table in order from the bottom to the top so that you can have a map of what comes from the base to the surface in your mind.
People Endowed with good will: | People Endowed with ill will: |
Attitude: Listen carefully Follow the good. | Attitude: Not ready to listen Persistent in bad practices |
Qualities: Knowledge Wisdom | Qualities: Unaware Foolish |
Secrets of the Chest: Fear of Allah Hope for mercy of Allah | Secrets of the Chest: Fearlessness Disappointment towards Allah |
When Allah SWT sees his servant, He sees the hearts. Therefore, in the Qur’an, this order is starting from the secrets of the chest.
Results:
The first question we tried to find the answer from the Qur’an was:
Question 1:
So why is Allah putting evil desires in our hearts? How is He deciding to give someone a good desire and a bad one to the other?
The secrets of the chest (fear of Allah and hope of Allah’s mercy) are the two basic things on which this decision is made. And in the heart, both things arise from knowledge and wisdom. And in the last part of verse 3, Allah SWT has made it clear that:
“Those are the people whom Allah has guided and those are the people of wisdom.” In response to this question, we came to the conclusion that:
“Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the wise.”
If Allah gives guidance (good desires), then it comes, otherwise,
Even the desires of the man himself are not in his control.
And what kind of desires Allah endowed to whom has been explained
in detail in the Quran.
Conclusion:
Here the question arises:
- Is it possible for a human being to acquire these two qualities of knowledge and wisdom by himself?
- Is there any option of authority for humans in this regard?
And the second question of the same set 1:
- If Allah has created our actions by will, why will our actions be seen? How are we responsible for these actions?
